Comparison with cell phone companies... which one is pure quality, service plus price?
Q. Of all the phone companies there are for Cell Phones, which one is the best? My personal opinion is T-mobile (www.t-mobile.com) Prepaid to go! and their sidekick LX kicks butt for only $1.00 a day... unlimited!
Asked by viriigrrl of EFNET! tika - Wed Apr 16 21:01:13 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. T-Mobile is not the best overall. Their is not one cell phone company perfect in everything, like price, or service, or call quality. GSM Carriers (like T-Mobile and Cingular) have issues with good call quality. They will have very scratchy calls and some other issues. Overall, they aren't the best. CDMA carriers like Verizon or Sprint offer more coverage and better call quality, but their price plans seem to come at us a little harder. You will pay more with Cingular or Verizon...but you will have slightly better coverage...and a lot better coverage with Verizon Wireless because they are constantly building.

Q. What characteristics would a store have that provides excellent customer service? What are the salespeople like? The cashiers? Is there a clear presence of the manager on duty? How much does good customer service influence your decision to return to a store? How important is it in comparison with prices? Would you actually be willing to pay a more if it meant you were getting better customer service? Give some examples of standard customer service behaviors that you would like to see changed. A. Unfortunately I see very little good customer service these days. Perhaps we'll see more of it with the recession now and people needing their jobs. I believe that cashiers and salespeople should be polite, helpful and keep in mind that customers pay their salaries. A smile is always nice! I've had unbelievable rudeness from cashiers. Many don't like large orders going through the line and if you have coupons they sigh or roll their eyes. I think they should be fired for this kind of behavior. I would pay more to go to a store with good customer service. I avoid some stores because of the rudeness of the cashiers.

What happened to www.cairo.com, the website that provided price comparisons for local brick&mortar retailers.?
Q. I used to search out the local ads on cairo.com instead of reading the circulars that are printed every week and included weekly in the newspaper. The URL was www.cairo.com, but it disappeared one day. (now you get a travelogue for Egypt!) I thought it was a great service. Wonder if there is another one out there like it. I know about the websites that do the same for online retailers, like PriceGrabber and Froogle...but I want to know if there is another website that checks and compares the local brick-&-mortar retailers sales ads each week.

A. I guess it's gone. This is a quote from an investor of the old cairo.com: "...when the new CEO sliced and diced the data, a more valuable business came to light - so we're moving in that direction which we think will be larger and more exciting opportunity -- we'll be able to tell you more about in a couple of months."

How good is satellite service?
Q. How does it do in bad weather (snow, rain, windy or cloudy conditions) and which company would you reccommend... I was going for Dish Network because it was cheaper than Directv ( on comparison of Dish Network's America's Top 120 w/120 channels and DirecTV's Total Choice Package w/155 channels). But I don't mind the prices because they are both cheaper than what I'm paying for Time Warner Cable right now which is $54.00 without tax

A. I love mine and get great reception in bad weather. The only exception is if snow actually builds up on the dish (which is rare, even here in Colorado) so have it installed somewhere you can get to it with a broom.

Some estimates suggest the German-owned company s 6.8 million customers face increases of about 15 per cent - 16 per cent for gas and 14 per cent on electricity. Npower s move is almost certain to trigger the five other leading UK suppliers to follow suit and signals a bleak winter for the four million Britons struggling to pay their power bills. How do you comparsion shop for routine health care services?
Q. I have a high-deductible health plan and would like to make the most out of my health care dollars by comparison shopping for prices. What tools do other consumers use to look up prices and find the best value. My health plan does not provide very good price transparency tools so I need to rely on other sources.
Asked by ConsumerAdvocate - Thu May 22 10:05:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. We desperately NEED price transparency and the system is rigged against it. What I recommend is get a really good PCP and start with his recommendations. Also see if you pay him cash at the time of service if he'll give you a discount--quite a few docs take 30-50% off for that as insurance is low and slow pay usually and the paperwork costs are enormous. Consider looking for things like lab work via grocery stores, drug stores, and Walmart. Kid you not. In Arizona, we have two chains of groceries that do that--Bashas and Fry's. They both have independent labs that come through about once a month and will do testing for greatly reduced costs versus what you normally pay via the doc sending you to some place or drawing your blood and… [cont.]

Cheaper options for getting around SE England by rail?
Q. My husband and I are planning a trip to England this summer and we are looking into taking some excursion trips from London to Stratford Upon Avon and Bath. I've been pricing the rail trips for this on National Rail and in comparison to what we pay for train service in the Netherlands the prices are insane. Is there a discount card or four day pass or some other value option that insiders know about that could save us travel costs on our trip?
Asked by Elizabeth N - Mon May 12 04:59:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. check out the railcard website - there is a south east network card that you can buy for UK20 which gives you 1/3 off your fares. I usually buy the family railcard when I'm home in the UK for a holiday and even though I only use it for a few weeks, it is worth buying rather than paying the full fare.

A. As you can see from the answers above, and from any online research you are about to do, you have asked a very good question, to which there are many different answers! That's because the answer to your question, cable versus DSL, is "it depends". Some people have a better experience with DSL. Most people have a better experience with cable. And still other groups of people couldn't care less, because either cable or DSL will be many times faster than their old dialup. In my own case, I tried DSL and it was lousy because my neighborhood was too far from the nearest telco central office, and this makes a difference as the bandwidth you get depends on how many thousands of feet of telephone wiring there is in your local loop. So not… [cont.]

I want "cable" TV, but Mediacom is EXPENSIVE. What can you tell me about Direct TV & Dish Network?
Q. I don't know much about either Direct TV or Dish Network, but their prices and channel selection look amazing in comparison to Mediacom and I'm wondering if people who have Direct TV or Dish Network are satisfied with their service. I also need to know if you have to have an active land phone line for either to work, because I just use a cell phone. Also, if you don't get the DVR devices to pause/rewind live TV, can you still connect a regular VCR to your TV and record programs? Any other general information you can give me about other cable options would also be much appreciated. Thank you!

A. I have had Dish for about 5 years now. I'm happy with it. Yes, you can record programs with your vcr. You also get an all-in-one remote that controls everything except a DVD player. You do not have to have a land line phone. If you want to order a PPV movie or event, you can call it in, or order on their website. We order a PPV movie about once a week (we ordered two today, Failure to Launch and Jarhead) via the internet, and it's always on within a couple minutes. It's an all day ticket too, so you can watch the movie over and over. We had some problems recently with the dish not receiving signal. We called them, and they were going to send out a repai guy. It would cost $90 up front, but they said we could get a repair service plan for $3 [cont.]

02 Broadband - any customers want to give their opinion?
Q. 02 broadband...is it any good? I just asked a similar question about the Sky combined phone/TV/broadband package and most people seemed impressed with them so we were going to order it BUT we've just found that it's not available in the area we're moving to. We've seen 02advertised as good value on a price comparison site and it would be cheap for us as we're 02 mobile customers already. So we wondered what people who have this service thought of it. We're especially concerned about the broadband technical back up - it is advertised as a UK based centre with free calls to it, is that really so? Are they swift at putting things right? All opinions welcome! Thanks TI T - could you expand a bit??

I am from NYC I visited Charlotte (Mecklenburg) and I loved it. Is it a good place to raise a family?
Q. I was in Charlotte, NC (Mecklenburg) for a week and I loved it. The homes were in sub communities at a reasonable price. A. You could get the stats about anything you want to know about any city in the world online and base your move on that information but to know first-hand from the people who actually live(d) in the area would probably be worth much more to you in the end. Like any other place you choose to investigate, you will find each has its good and bad points. You will find that when you are in NC visiting, what you see REALLY is what you get. We aren't a people who "pretend" too much about anything. When we tell you and your family to "come see us sometime", we really mean it (and expect it). People in NC generally are genuinely accepting of others no matter where they are from or what their cultures may be. Once you are moved into the area, don't… [cont.]

Speed (256/512kbps/1Mbps etc.) Usage limits (unlimited/2Gig/3Gig limit etc.) Quality of service (prompt customer service, minimal or no outages in service etc.) Price (price plans, modem/router charges, installation charges etc. After some quick browsing, I find that Tata Indicom offers an unlimited usage plan at 512kbps speed for Rs.1850 per month with no equipment and installation charges. Seems to be better than Airtel's Unlimited 1249 plan which offers unlimited usage at 256kbps for Rs.1249 per month.

A. Well I'm using BT and it seems quite reasonable. It's up to 8Mb/s, unlimited broadband, we get around 3.4Mb/s . I believe we pay something like 26 a month for that package, you can get other ones. But if you wanted a cheaper provider, there should be many available. Tiscali for example probably don't do a bad job from what some of my friends have said.
