Is there an Australian book price comparison search engine like isbn.nu?
Q. lets you compare prices between many international booksellers but international shipping is often quite slow. Does anyone know of a similar service that just searches Australian booksellers like Dymocks, A&R, Collins etc?

A. G'day Goosmurf, Thank you for your question. I have not been able to find such an index. However, I can advise of a couple of general engines. Good luck with your search. Regards

Why can't one specify what one wants to buy on e-bay and then sellers bid to provide the same? Defies econmcs?
Q. What could be the reason that a user cannot specify what he wants to buy (the exact product) and then sellers bid to provide the same on online websites like e-bay? Technologically, this is hardly any problem to implement; my question though is not about the technology limitations/complexities. Basically, why is online shopping a seller driven market i.e. a seller says he has something to sell and then users bid for it? Are there any evident issues with it being a buyer's market i.e. a user specifying that he wants to buy a product and then sellers bid to provide that product at the least possible price? Does a buyer's market defy some basic economic principles? In what kind of environment can a buyer's market exist? FYI: In countries… [cont.]

A. I believe that it depends on differences in the way both display the items, issues of trust and fear of manipulation.

Is there a high speed internet service provider comparison site...?
Q. where you can actually compare the real prices of ISPs, and not their promotional offers, so you can find out what the actuall prices are going to be. I am tired of searching and searching the net only to come across all the affiliate " ISP comparison sites", that are just loaded with a bunch of banners, that describe the ISPs promotional offers. It is really annoying, there are too many affiliates that are out to make money and want you to click on there banners and sign up so they make money, but there is no real informative sites that will actually give you the facts in a comparison chart of their internet speeds, and real prices.

Is direct TV quality really better than cable?
Q. I have had cable for years...i have HD channels, movie channels...everything. We keep hearing Direct TV quality is so much better. Is this true? We are not unhappy with our cable or anything..looks fine to us. It seems direct TV has all these promotional sign up deals but I am worried when they expire that the price will be jacked up. What are your experiences with Direct TV quality, customer service, price comparison vs. regular cable. Where is the best place to go get Direct TV? Seems like I get a coupon in the mail every other day. I also get attacked in SAMS club every time I got there.

A. DirecTV has more HD channels. The quality of cable HD and satellite HD is the same. The only difference is that with DirecTV you can't watch TV while it's raining.

How much do data and voice cell phone plans cost in Japan, where cellular service is ubiquitous?
Q. So I hear that just about everybody in Japan has a kick-ass cell phone with awesome data service. Since I can't read Japanese, I was just wondering what a standard cell phone plan with unlimited data and a reasonable of amount minutes costs over there? Mostly I am asking because I want to see if us USA consumers are being hoodwinked by the telecom companies, or if they charge a reasonable fee. Since they are obviously a cartel (how about them all raising SMS fees in unison) the only real price comparison can be done by looking at foreign companies.
Asked by EP - Sun Aug 31 00:52:09 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Depends on how much talk time you want. I had a plan with KDDI that allowed me a sliding fee plan for data. I think that it capped out at $40 though. As for voice, it cost me like 30-40$ a month. I think that most of the time I used email instead of talking to people though. All in all it cost me about 40-50$ a month but the most it cost me was about 80 when went data crazy. You can always get a smaller voice plan. I think that cell phones in japan are a million times better than those in the west... The phones certainly are!

Anyone know of some good avg. auto repair and parts pricing info websites to be used for comparison quotes?
Q. Wondered if anyone knew of some good websites to check average costs for auto repair/replacement, parts and avg. time needed to perform a service. For example: How may hours does it take to replace a water pump in a mid-sized car? Any useful sites are much appreciated. Thanks!

A. I use rockauto.com to compare parts prices, they're pretty cheap & have a pretty large parts catalog. Not sure of any sites that estimate labor for various jobs, although a repair manual (Haynes, Chilton etc) would have labor estimates.

Help! What is a "price index"?
Q. I think the answer is D, but I really don't feel confident with that. A price index is: a) a comparison of the price of a market basket from a fixed point of reference. b) a comparison of real GDP in one period relative to another. c) the cost of a market basket of goods and services in a base period divided by the cost of the same market basket in another period. d) a ratio of real GDP to nominal GDP.

A. That's called, wet noodle marketing. They get 1000 people to call them for quotes, and a few WILL be lower, but most won't. That's because there's no one insurance company that has the lowest rates for EVERYONE. There's no shortcut. You have to shop around, to find the cheapest rate for you. And those online places, well, they harvest your personal information to sell it for leads.

Cheaper options for getting around SE England by rail?
Q. My husband and I are planning a trip to England this summer and we are looking into taking some excursion trips from London to Stratford Upon Avon and Bath. I've been pricing the rail trips for this on National Rail and in comparison to what we pay for train service in the Netherlands the prices are insane. Is there a discount card or four day pass or some other value option that insiders know about that could save us travel costs on our trip?
Asked by Elizabeth N - Mon May 12 04:59:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. check out the railcard website - there is a south east network card that you can buy for UK20 which gives you 1/3 off your fares. I usually buy the family railcard when I'm home in the UK for a holiday and even though I only use it for a few weeks, it is worth buying rather than paying the full fare.

Is it worth paying extra ?
Q. Hunting around for car insurance, and could just go with the cheapest on a money comparison list - but is that the best option ? For a bit (to a lot!) more some insurers include benefits such as courtesy car & free legal service etc. But is it worth paying the extra for something I might not use ? I notice Direct Line are refusing to be part of these lists because they say they are not accurate comparisons as cheapest price is not necessarily the best deal. Now I know why it's called confused.com! Can anyone help me ?

A. I wouldn't pay for the legal service, it's highly unlikely that you would ever need it and if you did all you need to to is visit your local CAB for advice. I think the courtesy car is a good idea, I have this on my direct line policy as I would be lost without a car - I live in a village with no bus service - so I think the extra I pay is worth it and it's not much anyway, about 20 a year from what I remember

Q. I need to survey some people for my living in melbourne class. My topic is restaurants in Melbourne. Are there lots of good restaurants in your area? (Price wise, quality, service, popularity, pls include your general area) Does Melbourne have good restaurants? (in comparison to other cities) Which areas of melbourne have the best restaurants (city, inner suburbs, outer suburbs or specific suburbs) What's your favourite restaurant in Melbourne and why? I think that's all for now. Thank you :)

A. where i live in melbourne i am within 15 Min's of some of the best asian restaurants anywhere and only a few minutes to the greek capital of aus so i guess you can say we have some good eateries but nothing beats eating at home i don't really have any favourite restaurant it just depends on which part of the world i feel like eating from at the time wherever i go i always find the prices reasonable and always find the food quality and the service enjoyable but idon't believe that this is more so in melbourne than anywhere else in australia i have been interstate many times and always seem to find great restaurant or diners wherever i go i guess it is because australia is now a multicultural society

Need base price for dog boarding?
Q. Is the price based on size etc...animal per day?.Just trying to do a comparison on what it would have cost the client had she used kenneling services...I kept watch over 6 dogs , at their home, their food etc... for 3 nights and 3 days. I made 10 total trips, 8 roundtrip miles. Stayed with them sometimes 2-3 hours for play and companionship. Dont need the: "you should have agreed on a price before hand" spill, she will pay me what I ask. Thanks ! : )
